Servers - Reverse records

This article addresses the revision records for VPS SSD, VPS ON, Dedicated Servers and Cloud. To set up DNS records (excluding PTR records), follow the DNS - Domain Records tutorial.

In this article you will learn:

Reverse records

Reverse records are usually set up mainly for mailservers, because they are used to verify the identity of the sending server.

The recipient of the email will usually perform the following check:

  1. It will get a reverse record for your server's IP address (e.g. translate 46.28.106.11 to wes1-mx1.wedos.net).
  2. The detected name is translated again to the IP address - i.e. the A record for the corresponding domain (wes1-mx1.wedos.net at 46.28.106.11).
  3. Compares the results of the translations. If the IP address of the server and the DNS record match, the mail will usually pass, otherwise the recipient server may reject it.

The recipient uses this procedure to verify that the name in the reverse record is not forged. In fact, you can theoretically write any domain name in the reverse record without having anything to do with it. However, the reverse translation of that name to an IP address can only be set by the owner of that domain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it enough to just enter the reverse record to authenticate the server?

No, in addition to the reverse records, set the corresponding A and AAAA records on the appropriate domain.

Where can I enter PTRs?

Instead of PTR records, enter reverse records as above.

How do I enter a valid IPv6 address?

Servers and the Cloud are usually assigned the full range of IPv6 addresses. However, the reverse record must be in the format of one specific IPv6. Set the desired address on the server and in DNS, then enter it in the form. The field can start with a : character, for example, for an address in the form 2a02:2b88:2:1::1.
