Emails - Blacklist/whitelist

In this article you will learn:

Email blacklist and whitelist

These two lists are one layer of spam protection.

  • The blacklist contains addresses and domains from which the server completely rejects emails.
  • The Whitelist contains addresses that are exceptions to the Blacklist. So if you want to block an entire domain except for a small number of trusted addresses, add those addresses to the Whitelist.

You can set up blacklist and whitelist globally for the entire service and for individual mailboxes. Settings via the WebMail client are currently unavailable.

Blacklist and whitelist management

You can manage your blacklist and whitelist with any service that provides email hosting. To view blacklisted addresses, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the customer administration ⧉.
  2. In the top menu, click on Hosting Services Mailhosting, Webhosting, WMS, or WebSite.
  3. Select the service for which you want to view the blacklist or whitelist.
  4. In the left menu, select Emails - Blacklist/whitelist.

In the Sender List, you can see the entries:

  • Sender: a specific email address or the entire domain.
  • Type: information about whether the sender is blacklisted or whitelisted.
  • Mailbox: the mailbox for which the settings apply. A * indicates that the sender is on the list of all mailboxes.
  • Source and created: information about how and when the sender was inserted into the list(RoundCube - manual means inserted via WebMail).

Common problems

Common problems with blacklist/hitelist settings include:

Whitelisted address is not coming

Problem: I've added an address to the whitelist, but the mails still don't arrive/end up in spam.

Cause: The Whitelist does not participate in the mechanisms of receiving mail and sorting spam at all - it only suppresses selected rules of the user's Blacklist. Mail servers sort mail based on internal and external blacklists, and other common verification mechanisms such as SPF, DKIM and DMARC . For more information, see the article Emails - SPAM .

Solution: Ask the operators of the problematic mailboxes to improve the deliverability of the mail by setting (at least) an SPF record or delisting from public blacklists.

Blacklist is not enough

Problem: We receive a lot of spam from different mailboxes, we don't have time to blacklist them.

Cause: spam malware can infect more than one mail server mailbox, or mailboxes authorized to send under different names.

Solution: Blacklist the entire domain or the sender's IP address.
