IPv6 on VPS ON
VPS ON servers are assigned one IPv4 address and /64 IPv6 subnet by default. For each additional IPv4 address, the system also assigns the server an additional IPv6 subnet of the appropriate range.
Adding an IPv6 address to the OpenNebula SunStone interface usually makes it immediately available to the server. On Linux, you verify availability with the command ip a
.
Enabling IPv6 addresses in ON SunStone
By default, the VPS ON server has one IPv6 address enabled. You can find the available addresses in the OpenNebula SunStone administration by following these steps:
- Log in to the OpenNebula SunStone administration ⧉.
- In the left menu, select Instance Virt. Machines.
- Select your virtual machine.
- In the server details, click the Network tab.

Modifying the address range
The network adapter is configured by default for a capacity of just one IPv6 address. To add a second and additional address, first increase the network capacity by the following steps:
- In the left menu, select Network Virtual Networks.
- Select ipv6 network from the network menu.
- In the network details, click on the Addresses tab.
- Select the IP6_STATIC type and click Edit.
- Adjust the Range Size to the desired number of IPv6 addresses.

To add a new IPv6 address to the adapter
Finally, add the IPv6 address itself to the adapter by following these steps:
- Open the network detail according to the instructions at the beginning of the chapter.
- Click the Connect Network button . Adapter.
- Select the IPv6 adapter with free borrows and click Connect.

Common problems
Common problems with adding IPv6 addresses to VPS ON include:
The virtual machine is not loading
Problem: After modifying the virtual network, the VM does not load and displays the error message Error getting virtual machine.
Cause: due to the large number of connected servers, some changes are slower to commit.

Solution: Wait a few minutes and refresh the page in your browser. The virtual machine should load. If the message is still displayed after the browser has loaded, wait again for a few minutes.
The server is not loading the new IPv6 address
Problem: The server does not load IPv6 automatically.
Solution: First, try restarting the server. If that doesn't work, set up IPv6 directly on the server according to the instructions for your OS.
Frequently Asked Questions
What other settings do you recommend for the new IPv6 address?
We recommend that you route the domain to it via the AAAA record. If you are using the server as a mailserver, be sure to set up reverse IPv6 records.
