Domains - DNS redirection to VEDOS services

This article deals with automatic setting of DNS records of a domain to a certain hosting service (webhosting, WebSite, VPS and others). If you need to redirect a domain (i.e. point one domain to another domain), follow the Domains - Basic Redirection tutorial.

In this article you will read:

Directing DNS to services

DNS is a system of records that assigns IP addresses (easily readable by humans) to domains (easily readable by computers). At the very least, a typical domain needs to use these records to figure out which IP address to find a web host at, and where to find an email server. For more information on basic records, see the article DNS - Domain Records.

A change in DNS records typically takes 1-2 hours to take effect (regardless of the origin of the change).

These records are located on DNS servers. These servers are often managed by the domain registrar, but this is not the rule. You can have a domain with one registrar and its DNS records with another.

It can take up to 48 hours to change DNS servers. During this time, DNS queries can be directed to both new and old servers.

Thus, DNS pointing to services consists of writing DNS records with IP addresses or service names to selected DNS servers (NSSET).

Quick directions

Fast DNS record routing typically takes effect within 1 hour.

If you have the domain, DNS records, and target services with VEDOS, you can perform the redirection without any manual intervention in the DNS records:

  1. Log in to customer administration ⧉.
  2. In the top menu, select the Domains tab.
  3. Select the domain you want to point to the service.
  4. From the left menu, select DNS Service Record Settings.
  5. Select the service (or services) to which you want to point the domain (or subdomains).
    • You can point a domain to up to one arbitrary service.
    • You can point subdomains to the same services or aliases Webhosting, Mailhosting, WebSite, or WMS.
  6. Click Setup.

DNS settings on Webhosting, WebSite or WMS

Redirecting to Webhosting, WebSite or WMS will overwrite the appropriate A (or AAAA), CNAME and MX records for the domain, other records will remain unchanged. If you have a service set up for a subdomain (for example, webhosting sub.domena.tld), you can point it here separately.

Automatically set DNS records to Web hosting, WebSite or WMS changes MX records. If you use a mail service from a provider other than VEDOS, please consider manual setting of DNS records.

Settings on Mailhosting

Redirecting to Mailhosting will only overwrite the relevant MX records of the domain or subdomain.

DNS settings on Serverhosting, VPS ON, Cloud

The setting will overwrite only the relevant A records (if available), the others will remain unchanged. Further routing within the system is entirely the responsibility of the virtual server or cloud administrator.

DNS settings on WEDOS Global

The routing overwrites only the relevant A (or AAAA) records. Set the destination IP addresses in the WEDOS Global interface according to the external manual Protection - DNS and destination IP addresses &boxboxbox;.

Set to default page

Directs DNS to the "Domain is registered" page. The settings will only overwrite the relevant A and AAAA records, the others will remain unchanged.

Domain Redirection

Select this option if you are redirecting e-mail or a Web site to a domain, but the redirection settings did not redirect the domain automatically because of an error. The setting overwrites the appropriate A (or AAAA) records if you are redirecting a site, and MX records if you are redirecting e-mail. The other records will remain unchanged.

Manual DNS routing

DNS record settings typically take effect within 1 hour. Changing DNS servers can take up to 48 hours.

For detailed instructions on how to manually point DNS records, see the article DNS - Domain Records.

You can use the manual settings especially if you do not have all the services with VEDOS. Typical cases are:

  • Domain with another registrar: If the domain uses WENDOS DNS servers, set up DNS records manually according to the instructions in the link above.
  • Domain and DNS at another registrar: Set up DNS records manually with your registrar. Setting the DNS records of WEDOS will have no effect until you change the domain settings in DNS servers to our.
  • Webhosting/server hosting with another provider: set the appropriate A records. AAAA records should also be set if your hosting has an IPv6 address. If it does not, remove the original AAAA records.
  • Email with another provider: check your service provider's settings MX records, if applicable. TXT SPF record.

Common problems

Common problems with pointing a domain to services include:

Changing DNS records is not reflected

Problem: After pointing the domain to the service, even after 1 hour the change did not take effect.

Cause: This problem has two most common causes:

  • The domain does not use WEDOS DNS servers. If the domain does not use our DNS servers, any changes you make to them will not affect its operation.
  • The TTL value of the original record is greater than 1 hour. If the TTL parameter of the original record is 3600 or higher, the record has a lifetime of at least 1 hour and thus updates are slower.

Solution: Make sure the domain is using WEDOS DNS servers (NSSET). If the TTL value is high, wait longer.

The emails stopped coming

Problem: Quick Setup overwrote emails from another provider to VEDOS.

Cause: Directing to Webhosting, WMS and WebSite services overwrites both A and AAAA records and MX records.

Solution: Change the MX records manually according to the email service provider's instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I have a domain with another provider?

If you have a domain elsewhere and only have DNS with us, you have to set up DNS records manually. The system only performs automatic settings when you set up or rename the service (in the case of Webhosting, when you set up the alias).
