Domains - Re-registration (change of registrar)

This article deals with changing the domain registrar, not the owner. To change the owner of a domain, follow the instructions in Domains - Change Owner. To transfer the service to another person entirely, follow the instructions in Services - Transfer to a new owner.

Domain re-registration

When re-registering domains, only the domain registrar is changed, i.e. the company that mediates the domain registration with the administrator of the domain ending (registry).

When you re-register, you can change the billing details of the domain because from our point of view you are setting up a new service.

By re-registering a domain, you do not change its DNS servers. Therefore, before re-registering, make sure that the operator does not restrict or cancel these servers for the domain as a result of the re-registration. If you want to change the servers after re-registration, follow the instructions in Domains - Managing DNS Servers (NSSET).

Conditions for re-registration

In order to re-register domains, you need to meet certain conditions, most often paying the re-registration fee (which also extends the domain registration) and entering an authorization password.

Conditions for re-registration CZ

You can re-register a CZ domain in any state (including after expiration), except for the prohibition of changing the registrar. The re-registration is free of charge and does not extend the domain.

You can request an authorization password via the re-registration form, from any registrar, or directly from the CZ.NIC registry .

Conditions for re-registration of SK

You can re-register an SK domain in any state (including after expiration), except for the prohibition of changing registrar. Re-registration is charged by extending the domain for 1 year.

Request the authorization password (AUTH-ID) along with any removal of the prohibition on changing registrar from the current registration company.

EU re-registration conditions

You can re-register an EU domain in any state (including after expiry), except for the prohibition on changing registrar. Re-registration is subject to a 1-year renewal fee.

Request the authorization password (AUTH-ID) together with any removal of the prohibition to change the registrar from the current registration company or after logging in to the My .eu ⧉ interface.

Conditions for re-registration PL

You can re-register a PL domain in any state (including after expiration) under the following conditions:

  • The domain is not set to prohibit changing the registrar.
  • A period of at least 5 days must have elapsed since the registration or last re-registration.

Re-registration is free of charge, for expired domains there is a fee for a 1 year domain extension.

Request the authorization password (AUTH-ID) along with any removal of the prohibition on changing registrar from the current registration company.

Conditions for re-registration of gTLDs and nTLDs

You can re-register generic COM, NET, ORG, INFO and BIZ domains as well as new generic domains, e.g. NAME, ONLINE, WEBSITE etc. in any state (including after expiry) under the following conditions:

  • The domain is not set to prohibit changing the registrar.
  • A period of at least 60 days must have elapsed since the registration, last re-registration or last change of ownership.

Re-registration is charged by extending the domain for 1 year.

Request the authorization password (AUTH-ID) along with any removal of the prohibition on changing registrar from the current registration company.

Domain re-registration procedure

Before re-registering your domain, we recommend that you disable DNSSEC according to your current registrar's instructions.

Submit a domain re-registration request using the form in the customer administration. Open it by following these steps:

  1. Log in to the customer administration ⧉.
  2. In the top menu, select the Domains tab.
  3. In the left menu, click on Rename Domain.

In step 1 of the re-registration order, fill in the domain you want to re-register and tick whether you wish to set up web hosting for this domain in the subsequent order. The web hosting order is not part of the domain re-registration.

In the next step, enter the domain authorization password (for CZ domain re-registration, you can have it sent directly to the domain owner's e-mail). Fill in other specific settings and continue with the order.

If the re-registration form does not offer the option of sending an authorization password for your domain, please request one from your current registrar.

Complete your domain re-registration order.

In the event that the re-registration is charged, the system will immediately send the payment documents to the billing e-mail of the service. The actual re-registration will start immediately after successful payment of the fees.

The normal time to re-register is within 1 hour of meeting all the requirements. If it takes longer to re-register, make sure you have made all the necessary confirmations.

CZ domain re-registration

The CZ domain re-registration will take place within 1 hour of the completion of the re-registration order.

When a CZ domain is re-registered, neither the owner's domain contact nor its registrar changes. If you want to re-register the domain contact to us, please follow the instructions Domains - Manage Contacts.

SK domain re-registration

When re-registering an SK domain, you can assign the domain to an existing owner contact registered with us, or you can create a new contact during the order process. The registry does not support contact re-registration.

EU domain re-registration

When you re-register an EU domain, you can assign the domain to an existing owner contact registered with us, or you can create a new contact during the order process. Contact re-registration is not supported by the registry.

PL domain re-registration

After the re-registration fee is paid, the NASK registry will send an email requesting confirmation of the domain re-registration by clicking on the link. After the email confirmation of the re-registration, another email will be sent from the registry notifying you that the domain has been re-registered. The emails from the registry are in Polish and English.

When a PL domain is re-registered, the system creates a new domain contact with the same data as the original contact. The new contact will have a different ID. Re-registration of a contact is not supported by the registry.

Re-registering a gTLD or nTLD

When re-registering a generic domain, you can assign the domain to an existing owner contact registered with us, or you can create a new contact during the order process. Contact re-registration is not supported by the registry.

After the re-registration fee is paid, VEDOS will send an email requesting confirmation of the domain re-registration by clicking on the link. The validity of the link is 5 days, after which the application expires. This also verifies the email of the domain owner.

To activate an expired request, enter the domain's authorization password in the form in its detail ⧉. Entering the authorization password again will send a confirmation email. Without confirmation via the link in the email, the re-registration cannot be completed.

The original registrar may or may not send an email approving the re-registration:

  • If approved via email from the original registrar, re-registration will take place within 1 hour.
  • In case of rejection via email from the original registrar, you can start the re-registration process again in the domain details as described above. If you have changed your mind about re-registering, you can request a cancellation and a credit for the domain renewal fee via the &boxbox form.
  • If the original registrar does not send any email or you do not confirm it, the re-registration will take place 5 days after the original confirmation.

When re-registering a gTLD or nTLD, you can assign the domain to an existing owner contact registered with us, or you can create a new contact during the order process. Contact re-registration is not supported by the registries.

Mass domain re-registration

To re-register domains in bulk, you need an active deposit account with sufficient credit to cover the fees for all re-registered domains (prices excluding VAT).

To access the bulk re-registration interface, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the customer administration ⧉.
  2. In the top menu, select the Domains tab.
  3. Click on the Bulk re-registration link in the left menu.

Enter the domains you want to re-register in the form. Enter each domain on its own line. For each domain, you can also enter its authorization password on the same line. Separate it from the name with a space.

In the next step, enter the domain authorization passwords and agree to the re-registration conditions. Continue with the Continue button.

Tip: You can have the authorization passwords for CZ domains sent in bulk from our administration. Just put the list of CZ domains to be re-registered in the box on this link ⧉.

If all the details are correct, check all the details and the total price of the re-registration one last time and confirm the order with the Finish button.

For further information on the domain re-registration process, see the Domain re-registration chapter.

Common problems

Common problems with domain re-registration include:

Domain already registered

Problem: Error: domain cannot be re-registered - The domain is already registered with us.

Cause: the domain is already registered with WEDOS. If you don't have it in your customer account, it will be in someone else's account, for example with a former administrator.

Solution: If you only need to move a domain from someone else's account to your own, follow the instructions in Domains - Transfer using an authorization password.

Authorization password is not coming

Problem: Authorization password is not coming.

Cause: Most often the authorization password goes to a different mailbox than the one you are checking. In some cases, the recipient's system may evaluate the message as SPAM.

Solution: Check your SPAM mail. If the message is not there either, make sure you are checking the correct email. If you don't know the domain owner's email, ask your registrar for help.

Incorrect authorization password

Problem: The re-registration did not take place. Dear customer, due to entering the wrong authorization password "**********" when re-registering the domain domena.tld, the action could not be completed. ...

Cause: The authorization password you entered is incorrect. The most common sources of errors are:

  • entering the customer ID,
  • entering the authorization password of another domain or domain contact,
  • Expired authorization password (one-time or expired),
  • An incorrectly copied authorization password (for example, with spaces or character entities).

Solution: Follow the instructions in the email. Make sure you enter a current authorization password. Registries may change it after a certain amount of time or operation, so make sure the password you are entering has not been changed.

Long-lasting re-registration

Problem: The re-registration has been running for several days.

Cause: Most often the omission of a confirmation email from the current registrar.

Solution: Check that you have successfully paid for your re-registration and confirmed all emails you have received regarding your re-registration.

Unavailable settings during re-registration

Problem: After re-registering, I cannot change the DNS servers of the domain or other settings.

Reason: Domain re-registration can be a time-consuming process that is entirely the domain registry's responsibility. Neither the original nor the new registrar may have immediate feedback on the progress of the re-registration and inform the domain owner in real time.

Solution: Perform any risk settings (especially changes to DNS servers, disabling DNSSEC) before starting the re-registration and make sure the changes are saved correctly. In addition, do your best to speed up the re-registration process - pay any fees using fast payment methods, watch your email for confirmation messages.

Broken domain after re-registration

Problem: After re-registering the domain and setting up the web hosting/WebSite, the domain is still pointing to the previous hosting, or has stopped working.

Cause: the re-registered domain is not using our DNS servers. The original registrar may have disconnected theirs.

Solution: Change the DNS servers manually according to the Domains - DNS Server Settings (NSSET) instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What about re-registering gTLDs from Ascio directly to WEDOS?

Before we were accredited by ICANN for direct registration of gTLD domains, we had to use Ascio as an intermediary. Unfortunately, this comes with various limitations. Now we can register domains directly through this site in the customer administration.

If I re-register a foreign domain, do I become the owner?

The main purpose of domain re-registration is to change the registrar, not the owner. To change the owner of a domain, follow the instructions in Domains - Change Owner. The need to use an authorization password verifies that the change is being made by an authorized person.

How do I re-register a domain from VEDOS to another registrar?

Consult the documentation or the new registrar's support for instructions.
