This article covers the basic operation of the WebFTP client. For instructions on how to manage FTP accounts in the customer administration, see Webhosting- FTP Accounts. For general instructions on managing web hosting files, see Web Hosting - File Management.
In this article you will learn:
- Basic information about the WebFTP client
- How to log in to FTP
- How to navigate between directories
- How to work with files and folders
- Common problems
- Frequently Asked Questions
Basic information about WebFTP
The WebFTP FTP client can be found at https://webftp.wedos.net/ ⧉. It allows access to files:
- Web Hosting Services
- WEDOS Disk services
The WebFTP client does not currently support access to WMS web hosts. Use another FTP client, such as FileZilla.
You can only access WEDOS services via WebFTP that support this access.
The advantage of WebFTP is access through a browser without the need to install anything. Disadvantages include limitations on transfer speed and supported file actions.
As an alternative to WebFTP, we recommend the FileZilla desktop FTP client.
After opening the WebFTP interface ⧉, log in. You will need the following information:
- FTP server name
- Username
- Password:
If you don't know this information, please follow the FTP - Login instructions to get it.
Fill them out in the form on the login screen and click the Login button.

To log out, click on the red button (icon) at the top right of the client.
Browsing between directories
After a successful login, the client lists the contents of the directory you entered.
Only the main FTP account has access to the service root directory. For more information, see Webhosting - FTP accounts.
You can navigate between folders by clicking on the folder name.
The folder named .. above will take you to the directory that contains the folder you are currently browsing.
If you need to quickly move a few more directories, use the breadcrumb navigation of the Directory Tree. The root link leads to the root directory (the default for your FTP account).

File management
With WebFTP, you can perform the following actions on files and directories:
To create directories and files
Create a new file or directory by clicking the corresponding button in the top left of the file overview.

- For a new directory, the system prompts you to enter and confirm the name. It will create the new directories in the current location, and return you to that location after the directories are created.
- For a new file, the system opens the code editor. Enter the name (including the extension) of the new file and type or paste the code in the text box. After saving, the system will save the file in the current location, where it will return you when you exit the editor.
Recording
To start the interface for uploading a new file, click the Upload button at the top left of the file overview.

In the recording interface, you can:
- In the Upload to directory text box, set the folder to which you want to upload the file.
- Under Files on the left, select the files (not folders) you want to upload.
- In the right section Archives (zip, tar, tgz, gz) select the zip, tar, tgz or gz files you want to upload and unzip at the same time.
When you have finished selecting files, click the green confirmation button in this interface.

If a file with that name already exists in that directory, WebFTP will overwrite it without further notice!
To upload to the web:
- Archive and do not unzip it, upload it as a file in the left part of the form.
- Pack the folder containing the files into a zip, tar, tgz or gz archive and upload it in the right part of the form.
Display and editing
You can view or edit individual files directly in WebFTP. The view works for most code and image files, you can only edit text files.

- The file view prints the code text including line numbering, or displays the image in its original size.
- Editing a file attempts to open the file in a text editor.
Click on the file name to download it to the connected device.
Change selected items
In the top-right corner of the File Explorer, you'll find tools for bulk file and folder management:
- Copy. Copies the selected files to another directory or FTP server.
- Move. Moves the selected files to another directory or FTP server.
- Delete. After confirming the list, it deletes the selected files.
- Rename. Changes the names of the selected files.
- Rights. Sets the rights to read, write, and execute files. If you do not know how these rights work, do not interfere with the settings.
- Download. Downloads the selected files. If you are downloading a folder or more than 1 file, WebFTP will package the contents into a zip file before downloading.
- Zip. Wraps the items in a zip archive, which it saves on the server or sends by email.
- Unzip. Unzips the zip archive to the selected directory.
- Size. Calculate and display the total size of the selected files.
- Search. Searches folders and subfolders for files containing the specified expression.
First, use the checkboxes on the left side of the table to check the files you want to manage. Click the All link in the column header to select all entries.

Uploading or downloading from WebFTP is slow, sometimes it crashes completely. What should I do?
Use a desktop FTP client. We recommend FileZilla ⧉.
