VPS ON – Increasing Parameters

On this pageUpgrading VPS ON parametersPerforming the upgradeCommon problemsFrequently Asked Questions

This article covers upgrading the parameters of the VPS ON service. If you want to upgrade the parameters of VPS SSD, follow the guide VPS SSD – Upgrading Parameters.

In this article, you will learn:

Upgrading VPS ON parameters allows you to change the number of CPU cores, the RAM size and the SSD size independently of each other, within the given limits. The system allows the following parameter ranges:

  • CPU cores: 1 to 4
  • RAM: 0.5 to 16 GB
  • SSD disk space: 5 to 480 GB

CPU performance is shared at a ratio of 1:3 by default. As part of the upgrade, you can activate dedicated CPU cores for the given VPS only.

The system does not support downgrading VPS ON parameters. The upgrade process is therefore irreversible for the given VPS ON.

Performing the upgrade

Before upgrading the parameters, take the following precautions:

  • Expect the server to restart. Make sure that all services start up correctly on the server after the restart.
  • Make a backup. The upgrade itself does not cause any data loss, but we have recorded cases of damage caused by improper intervention during or following an upgrade.

Then follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the Customer Administration ⧉.
  2. In the top menu, select Server services VPS ON.
  3. Select the service you want to upgrade from the list.
  4. In the left menu, select Upgrade variant.
  5. Use the slider to set the target parameters and confirm with the button Upgrade Variant.

System restart

After the upgrade is completed in the Customer Administration, perform a complete shutdown and startup in the interface ON Sunstone using these steps ⧉:

  1. Shut down the server using the option Power off (Power Off).
  2. Copy the powered-off server away using the option Power off and Undeploy (Undeploy).
  3. Start the undeployed server using the button Resume (Resume).

You can find detailed instructions for performing a restart in the guide VPS ON – Server Restart (Reset).

Checking the file system

If you are upgrading the disk, check that the file system has been expanded correctly.

  • On a pre-installed OS, the expansion should happen automatically. If it does not, follow the instructions in the chapter Common problems.
  • If you use a custom OS or LVM, expand the disk on the server manually.

Common problems

Common problems with upgrading VPS ON parameters include:

The upgrade was not applied on the server

Problem: The system still shows the original parameter values.

Cause: A common cause is an insufficiently thorough restart.

Solution: Perform a hard reset of the server in the administration ON Sunstone according to the chapter System restart. Any other kind of restart is not enough.

System stuck in an error state

Problem: The system has been stuck for more than 10 minutes in the PROLOG_FAILURE, EPILOG_FAILURE or a similar state.

Solution: Contact us via the form with a request for investigation. Include the name or number of the VPS ON service, the situation that led to the error (for example, a shutdown after upgrading the parameters) and the error state.

The file system was not expanded

Problem: The file system was not expanded automatically on a pre-installed OS.

Solution: Expand the disk on the server manually. You can find more information and guides in the community article VPS – Expanding the File System.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make the operating system settings for me?

No, we do not intervene in the operating systems on VPS ON.

Is it really necessary to restart with undeploying? Will it damage my files?

Make sure the system is shut down first, and then undeploy it. This minimizes the risk.
