VEDOS Server Hosting
Server hosting services offer experienced users the performance and space to carry out practically any project. The following applies to all server services:
- Setup is fully automatic and takes place within 1 hour of the order being paid.
- Installing and running server software (including the operating system) is entirely the customer’s responsibility.
Depending on the needs of your project, you can choose between these services:
- Virtual server: A virtualized server on a shared physical server. The most affordable server hosting option.
- Dedicated Server: A server with dedicated hardware and a fixed configuration.
- Cloud: A service on the OpenNebula cloud platform.
Virtual server
A virtual private server (VPS) runs on the virtualized hardware of a physical server shared with other customers. Virtualization software divides system resources so that the VPS behaves like a separate physical server with the given performance.
You can increase the performance of a VPS in the Customer Administration, but you cannot decrease it. Performance limits are determined by the VPS variant you choose.
WEDOS offers two VPS variants:
- VPS SSD is a variant that uses an older virtualization technology. You increase performance and disk space by adding modules of a fixed size. You manage the server through KVM software using the VNC protocol (encrypted via SSL). You can find more information on the VPS SSD product page ⧉.
- VPS ON uses the OpenNebula virtualization technology. You increase performance and disk space independently, according to the needs of your system. You manage the server in your browser through the OpenNebula Sunstone interface. You can find more information on the VPS ON product page ⧉.
An overview of VPS performance is in the table:
| VPS SSD | VPS ON | |||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| minimum | maximum | minimum | maximum | |
| RAM | 2 GB | 32 GB | 0.5 GB | 16 GB |
| CPU cores (threads) | 0,5 (1) | 4 (8) | 1 (2) | 4 (8) |
| SSD storage | 15 GB | 2 × 240 GB | 5 GB | 480 GB |
We back up VPS ON once a week in case of a disk array failure. In necessary cases, we can restore the backup for a fee at the customer’s request. For VPS SSD, backup is an Add-on Service. You can find more information on the page Backup ⧉.
Dedicated Server
A dedicated server is a physical computer that you rent entirely for yourself. The server has a fixed hardware configuration determined by the variant you choose, and you manage it through the iLO/iRMC and KVM interfaces. You can find more information on the dedicated servers product page ⧉.
We do not back up dedicated servers.
Cloud
With the Cloud service, you can create any number of virtual servers and connect them to other cloud solutions. You configure the Cloud’s system resources according to your current needs, and the same limits apply to individual servers as for the VPS ON service. You manage it through the OpenNebula Sunstone interface. You can find more information on the Cloud service product page ⧉.

Server management
To run and manage a virtual server, you need at least basic knowledge of administering the relevant operating system. For VPS and Cloud servers, we offer selected pre-prepared installations of Linux operating systems. However, we offer no guarantee or support for the preinstalled software. We do not install software or perform configuration and modifications.
Managing software on the server is entirely the customer’s responsibility. If you have no experience with server administration, consider using the Webhosting ⧉ or WMS ⧉.
Connecting to the server
Basic server operation is provided by the KVM interface, that is, keyboard, monitor and mouse. This interface is available in different ways for different services:
- VPS SSD you connect through a VNC client. You can find more information in the article VPS SSD – Accessing the Server via VNC.
- VPS ON and Cloud have a built-in KVM console directly in the OpenNebula SunStone ⧉.
- Dedicated Servers use either their own KVM clients (see the manuals iLO, iRMC), or you can use VNC clients as with VPS SSD.
Operating system installation
OS installation differs depending on the server hosting variant you choose:
- VPS SSD: You can select the operating system as early as in the orders ⧉. If you need to reinstall, follow the guide VPS SSD – Installing a Prepared OS or VPS SSD – Attaching an ISO and Installing Your Own OS.
- VPS ON: You can select the operating system as early as in the orders ⧉. If you need to reinstall, follow the guide VPS ON – Installing a Prepared OS, VPS ON – Attaching Your Own ISO and Installing an OS, or respectively VPS ON – Installing Windows with VirtIO.
- Dedicated Server: We deliver dedicated servers without an OS only. Follow the guide Dedicated Servers – iRMC Manual for Fujitsu servers, or the guide Dedicated Servers – iLO Manual for HP servers.
- Cloud: OS installation on Cloud works the same way as on VPS ON, except that it is not possible to select the operating system in the order.
Troubleshooting
You can find solutions to common server problems in the article VPS – Troubleshooting.
Glossary
- Cloud: A technology that allows you to create virtual servers as needed.
- Distribution: In the context of server hosting, most often a Linux OS variant, for example Debian or Ubuntu.
- IP address: The numeric address of a server on the network. The content of DNS records of type A and AAAA.
- KVM: Keyboard-Video-Mouse. An interface for managing a virtual server with a keyboard, display and mouse.
- Linux: An open source operating system. We install selected distributions automatically on VPS SSD, VPS ON and Cloud servers.
