Services - Switching between Webhosting and Mailhosting

This article addresses the transition between web hosting services (Webhosting, WebSite) and Mailhosting. If you want to activate email at the same time as web hosting (except for WebSite Free), you don't need any additional service - just set up mailboxes with webhosting following the instructions in Emails - Mailboxes.

In this article you will learn:

Comparison of services in terms of emails

You can use both Mailhosting and other hosting services to host your emails. If you want to have a website in addition to your emails with VEDOS, we recommend choosing Webhosting or WebSite.

A detailed comparison of relevant parameters of hosting services can be found in the following table:

Switching from web hosting to Mailhosting

Switch to Mailhosting if you want to operate on the domain:

  • just e-mails, not the web;
  • emails with VEDOS and web with another provider.

The procedure consists of the following steps:

  1. Domain name release
  2. Order Mail Hosting
  3. Modifying DNS records of type MX
  4. Migrating existing mail

Releasing a web hosting domain name

The system does not allow you to create or set up two services containing mailhosting of the same name. So first unblock the name by modifying the original web service by renaming it:

for example, to stary.domena.tld, replacing domena.tld with the original domain.

If the domain name blocks the webhost alias, remove it according to the Webhosting - Aliases instructions.

Order Mail Hosting

Now you can create a new Mailhosting for the domain.

Change MX records on Mailhosting

If the domain does not use WEDOS DNS records, or if for some reason you do not want to have them changed automatically, set up these MX DNS records after setting up Mailhosting:

Name TTL Type Data
          300 MX 10 mx1.wedos.email
          300 MX 10 mx1.wedos.global
          300 MX 10 mx1.wedos.com
          300 MX 10 mx1.wedos.mx
          300 MX 20 mx1.wedos.online

Migration of existing mail to Mailhosting

You can migrate your existing mail to the newly established mailhosting automatically by following the instructions in Emails - Automatic migration or manually using the desktop client.

When automatically migrating from renamed web hosting to Mailhosting, enter the following for @ the new name of the Web Hosting or WebSite.

Switching from Mail Hosting to Web Hosting

Switch to web hosting (Webhosting, WMS, WebSite except Free) if you want to run both web and email on the domain.

The procedure consists of the following steps:

  1. Domain name release
  2. Order web hosting
  3. Modifying DNS records of type MX
  4. Migrating existing mail

Mailhosting domain name release

First, unblock the name by modifying the original Mailhosting by renaming it according to the Mailhosting - Rename (domain change) instructions, for example to stary.domena.tld, replacing domain.tld with the original domain.

Order web hosting

Now you can set up WebHosting or WebSite for the domain (except for Free, which doesn't support email).

Change MX records on web hosting

If the domain does not use WEDOS DNS records, or if for some reason you do not want to have them changed automatically, set up these DNS records of type MX after setting up the mailhost:

Name TTL Type Data
          300 MX 1 wes1-mx1.wedos.net
          300 MX 1 wes1-mx2.wedos.net
          300 MX 10 wes1-mx-backup.wedos.net

Migrating existing mail to web hosting

You can move your existing mail to the web hosting using automatic migration according to the Emails - Automatic Migration instructions, or manually using the desktop client.

When automatically migrating from the renamed Mailhosting to web hosting, enter the following for @ the new name of Mailhosting.

Common problems

Common issues with the transition between web hosting and Mailhosting include:

Domain name used for another service

Problem: Error: domain name is already used by another service.

Cause: two services that support e-mail and have the same domain name cannot be in the system at the same time.

Solution: Make sure you rename the original service (or ask support to remove the name).

Unavailable mailboxes of the original service

Problem: The mailboxes of the original service cannot be accessed (or the migration script fails to access them).

Cause: renaming the original hosting service changed the name (login) of the mailbox.

Solution: For example, if you had the original mailbox info@domena.tld and renamed the service to stara.domena.tld, the login for this mailbox is now info@stara.domena.tld. If you have asked support to remove the service name, add the service identifier as found in the customer administration after the username, for example info@w123456. The mailbox password is not affected by renaming the service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if I want both web hosting and mail hosting?

Mailhosting is already part of Webhosting, WMS and paid WebSite services. Especially you only set it up if you do not want web hosting (or you have it with another provider).

Why do I have to migrate my mail? Can't you just shut down the website and just leave me the mails?

Mailhosting is a separate service and simply "shutting down the site" is not currently technically supported.

I want to have a website as an alias, but emails separately. How should I arrange it?

At the moment, unfortunately, only a separate Webhosting, on which you will run both separate emails and web.
