This article covers resetting a VPS SSD. If you need to reset a VPS ON, follow the guide VPS ON – Server Restart (Reset).
In this guide, you will learn:
When to use a restart
For virtual servers, we distinguish 2 types of restart:
- Soft reset – restarting through the operating system: the operating system shuts down, saves all work, and issues a command to restart the machine.
- Hard reset – a forced restart (similar to unplugging the power and plugging it back in): used when a soft reset is not enough (for example increasing the parameters), or if the operating system is not working.
Restarting a VPS SSD
You can restart a VPS SSD from the Customer Administration by following these steps:
- Log in to the Customer Administration ⧉.
- In the top menu, select Server services VPS SSD.
- In the list, select the service you want to restart.
- In the Server control panel, select the required way to shut down, start up, or restart.

The buttons perform the following functions:
- power on: starts the server if it was turned off
- power off: forced shutdown of the server
- shutdown: sends a shutdown request to the operating system via ACPI (if the operating system on the VPS supports this function and has it enabled, it will begin shutting down); sometimes this request needs to be sent several times
- soft reset: restart through the operating system
- hard reset: forced restart of the server
Shutting down and hard resetting the server disconnects the VNC client.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know whether to use a soft or hard reset?
If a task explicitly requires a hard reset, perform one. Another common use of a hard reset is when the operating system does not respond to a soft reset request.
