Web Hosting - Application Installer

This article addresses the installation of applications using the built-in installer of Webhosting NoLimit and NoLimit Extra, or for WMS.

LowCost web hosting does not include an application installer.

In this article you will read:

Application Installer

With the application installer, you can quickly and easily install one or more popular PHP applications on your web host.

The installer performs only a one-time initial installation. All further management, maintenance and updating of the application is entirely up to the customer. We are not responsible for the correct functionality of the applications.

You can find the current range of applications, including their versions, in the installer menu (see the section Installing an application). For other applications, install them manually according to the manufacturer's manual.

The application installer creates its own FTP folders in the www/domains/domena.tld directory, where domain.tld is the specific domain to which the installer is installing. It also creates its own databases with randomly generated names.

With the installer, you can install a maximum of 30 applications per web host.

Application installation

Before you start the installation, make sure that:

  • the domain or subdomain you are installing to has DNS records set up and signed to the web host,
  • the FTP folder you want to install to in the www/domains/(installation destination) directory is empty or does not exist,
  • in the www directory you have a .htaccess file with our rules.

To install the application, first enter the installer menu as follows:

  1. Log in to your account in the customer administration ⧉.
  2. Select the Hosting Services tab Webhosting or WMS.
  3. Open the details of the web host you want to install on.
  4. Select Application Installer from the left menu.

In the installer menu you will find all supported applications, including the highest version you can install via the installer. For some applications, you can also install lower versions.

To continue the installation, select the application you want to install from the menu.

Application detail

After selecting the application, you will be taken to the details page, where you will find mainly a list of available versions and the application's PHP version requirements and enabled features. You will also find links to the web, documentation, or support for the application.

To continue with the installation, select the version of the application and click Install.

2. Application settings

Fill in the required settings and click Continue.

Store your access data to the application in a safe place. Restoring them is governed by the rules of the application, you will not find them in the customer administration after successful installation.

3. Order Summary

In this step, check the installation target and settings. At the latest in this step, the installer will warn you of any errors.

If there is an error in the settings (previous step), you can change it by clicking the Settings link in the table.

In case of an error in the installation target (first step), start the installation again.

4. Installation

In this step, you can monitor the progress of the installation. The system will then display information about the successful completion of the installation.

The installer creates a database for the application. During installation, you will receive an email about the database creation, which you can archive or delete.

Common problems

The most common causes of application installer failures are:

Domain does not point to hosting

Problem: An error message appears: the selected domain (or subdomain) does not point to this webhost in DNS.

Cause: the domain is not directed to the webhost, the direction is not yet resolved in DNS (due to a recent change of DNS records or servers), or the direction to the webhost is hidden by a reverse proxy (WEDOS Global, CloudFlare and similar services).

Solution: Find out where your domain has DNS records. If they are with us, change them by following the instructions in DNS - Domain Records, or Domains - DNS Directions to Services. Wait for the DNS records to resolve (usually takes 1-2 hours) and then repeat the installation.

If your domain uses WEDOS Protection ⧉ or another reverse proxy service, temporarily point the domain's DNS (or specific subdomains) to the webhost directly. If you don't know how to do this, contact customer support ⧉.

Existing applications

Problem: An error message appears The installation order below has the same installation target as you entered in the form.

Cause: You can't reinstall apps directly, to install one you must first delete the previous app in the same target.

Solution: Before proceeding with the installation, make sure you are installing to the correct directory and not overwriting the installation of the application you want to keep. To reinstall an existing application, do the following:

  1. In the warning, click the Uninstall App button and proceed with a new order.
  2. Connect to the hosting via an FTP client (for example webFTP ⧉).
  3. In the FTP folder www/domains, delete the folder with the previous version of the installation.
  4. Proceed with the new installation.

Errors in the .htaccess file

Problem: The error message "The specified installation target is not available over HTTP(S) protocol" appears in the third step. You are probably not using our default .htaccess.

Cause: This error can have two main causes: the .htaccess file in the www folder either does not route requests according to the expected (default) directory structure of the web host, or it contains HTTPS enforcement code that can complicate the installation.

Solution: Restore the default .htaccess file in the customer administration and install again via http.

If necessary, after the installation is complete, delete the restored .htaccess file in the www folder and rename the last backup to .htaccess.

Old files in the target folder

Problem: In the third step an error message appears: the destination directory /www/domains/domain.tld is not empty.

Cause: after uninstalling the application in the administration, you probably forgot to delete the FTP files, or an FTP error prevented the deletion.

Solution: Connect to the hosting via an FTP client (for example webFTP ⧉). In the FTP, in the www/domains folder, delete the folder you want to install to and retry the installation.

If you cannot delete the original installation folder, correct the file permissions and try again. If problems persist, activate temporary access for support and contact us.

Unsupported PHP version

Problem: In the first step, the error message "The application cannot be installed because the configuration does not meet the following requirements: ...

Cause: You have too old (or too new) version of PHP set up on your web host.

Solution: Edit the PHP configuration in the customer administration. Wait for 30 minutes for the new version to propagate and install the required application.

After successful installation, you can upgrade the PHP version again if the application itself supports it.

Installation successful, there is a plugin error on the website

Problem: After a successful installation, an error appears on the web or when trying to log into the administration Warning: session_start(): open(/data/web/virtuals/X/virtual/session/sess_xxx, O_RDWR) failed: No such file or directory (2) in /data/web/virtuals/X/virtual/www/domains/domains.tld/wp-content/plugins/limit-login-attempts-reloaded/core/LimitLoginAttempts.php on line 387

Cause: a bug in the pre-installed security plugin Limit Login Attempts Reloaded.

Solution: Disable the plugin via FTP:

  1. Log in with your FTP account to WebFTP ⧉.
  2. Go to the WordPress plugins folder, for example www/domains/domaena.tld/wp-content/plugins/.
  3. Rename the limit-login-attempts-reloaded folder to limit-login-attempts-expressed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the installation doesn't work over https, but I need the application to be accessible over https?

Install the application via http and set https in the application after installation. Follow the instructions in Webhosting - Setting up HTTPS on the website.

I need a different version of the application than the one in the installer. How should I proceed?

If you want a higher version, you can install the one in the installer and then upgrade.

Install a lower version manually, following the instructions of the manufacturer or distributor of the application.

Can I use plugins in the app?

Yes, you can extend the app with plugins after installation. However, take into account the performance of the web host. A large number of plugins with high performance requirements can lead to Error 503.

Can I install multiple applications on one hosting?

Yes, as long as you install them in different places (domains, subdomains, folders). The maximum number of applications installed in this way is 30.
