Webhosting – Automatic Data Migration

This article covers basic automatic data migration to empty VEDOS Webhosting. To migrate a website as an alias of existing VEDOS Webhosting, follow the guide Webhosting – Expert Automatic Data Migration, which builds on this guide.

To migrate a website manually, follow the guide Services – Moving from Another Provider.

In this article, you will learn:

Automatic website migration requirements

Before starting basic automatic website migration, check that you meet these requirements:

  • You have FTP access to the website files at the original provider. Various online website editors (similar to WebSite ⧉) do not support this access and therefore cannot be migrated.
  • The domain points to the original website. Make DNS server and record changes only after migration is complete. When ordering or managing services, pay close attention to automatic DNS change options.
  • You have newly created or empty Webhosting at VEDOS. If the destination Webhosting already contains data, we strongly recommend backing it up. If you delete the old website, restore the basic directory structure using this guide.

Starting automatic website migration

Once you have FTP access details for the original provider and new or reset NoLimit Webhosting, start automatic migration as follows:

  1. Log in to Customer Administration ⧉.
  2. In the top menu, select Hosting services Webhosting or WMS.
  3. Select the destination Webhosting from the service list.
  4. In the left menu, select Migration from competitors – website.
  5. Read and complete the migration form carefully.
  6. Click the button Continue.

FTP details for the original Webhosting are available from the original provider. If the provider will not supply them, migration is not possible.

If the original Webhosting domain differs from the current Webhosting name, enter in the field Source domain on the original Webhosting the domain name whose content you want to migrate.

Every migration to NoLimit and NoLimit Extra Webhosting includes a free test domain, which you select from the dropdown. The free period is 1 year, and if testing succeeds, you can also use the domain for another project.

As part of migration, you must agree that data in the selected folder on VEDOS Webhosting will be backed up, then deleted from FTP and replaced with new files.

VEDOS keeps the backup of the original hosting data for 30 days.

Migration does not affect data on the original Webhosting.

Checking the website before going live

When automatic migration finishes, the interface displays confirmation of successful completion.

By clicking the link (here) in the column Status displays the website on the test domain selected when requesting automatic migration. If the website works on this domain, you can:

  • Complete migration. The migration script replaces test domain details with the Webhosting name.
  • Leave it as it is. The website continues to work on the test domain; you must make any further configuration changes manually.

If migration fails, whether during the process (the column Status is Error) or during checking or completion (the website does not work correctly on the test domain or after completion), enable temporary FTP access using this guide and contact Customer Support via the form ⧉. Include the website name and a detailed error description, ideally with a screenshot.

Completing automatic website migration

If your migrated website works correctly, you can point the corresponding domain to it.

If both your domain and DNS are with WEDOS and you want to run both the website and email on Webhosting, you can point the domain using this guide.

Otherwise, configure the appropriate A, AAAA and, if necessary, MX records of the web hosting.

Common issues

Common basic data migration problems include:

Unavailable FTP

Issue: The following appears: Input validation error (50: Source FTP incorrect login) or another FTP problem.

Cause: You entered incorrect FTP details, or the FTP account at the original provider is blocked.

Solution: Check that the FTP login details are correct (for example, try using them in an FTP client). Also check that your provider’s FTP account is not blocked or restricted to specific IP addresses. Work with the provider to remove blocking or restrictions.

Incorrect website display

Issue: The website displays incorrectly on the test domain or after migration is complete.

Cause: Basic migration always targets the default www folder and deletes all existing data there, including previous migrations.

Solution: Enable temporary FTP access using this guide and contact Customer Support via the form ⧉. Include the website name and a detailed error description, ideally attaching screenshot ⧉.

Existing website overwritten

Issue: The website previously on Webhosting (including multiple migrated websites) stopped working.

Solution: To migrate several different websites to one Webhosting service, use expert migration. If migration accidentally overwrote an existing website on that hosting, contact us as soon as possible via the form ⧉ and request restoration of the backup created during migration. Include the Webhosting name. We keep migration backups for a maximum of 30 days.

Frequently asked questions

What should I migrate first, the domain or Webhosting?

Domain transfer, DNS server changes or DNS records is recommended only after checking that the website works on the test domain.

Can I use automatic migration between two VEDOS Webhosting services?

Yes, you can migrate between any Webhosting and WMS services. WebSite 1.0 ⧉ cannot be migrated. You can also hand over.

What happens to the original data at the competitor?

Migration does not affect the competitor’s data. The script only copies it, so it should not be damaged or deleted.

Can I migrate multiple websites to one Webhosting service?

Yes, but only using expert migration. For more information, see the article Webhosting – Separate Websites for Aliases.

How are databases migrated if I enter only FTP details?

For WordPress, the migration script can obtain database access itself. For other content management systems or custom websites, enter the database in expert mode using the guide Webhosting – Expert Automatic Data Migration.

How can I check the website on the main domain before pointing it there?

Use this A record configuration guide to find the Webhosting IPv4 address, then configure it in the following file using instructions for your operating system: hosts.

How long will copying take? Can I close the migration window?

Copying time depends on data volume and migration server load. Expect roughly tens of minutes to a few hours. If migrating a relatively small website takes more than several hours, ask Support ⧉to investigate. You can close the window. The system emails you when migration is complete.
