For instructions on switching between other service types, see the article Services – Changing the Hosting Type.

Switching from website hosting to Mailhosting

Switch to Mailhosting if you want to run on your domain:

  • email only, without a website;
  • email with VEDOS and a website with another provider.

The process consists of these steps:

  1. Releasing the domain name
  2. Ordering Mailhosting
  3. Changing MX DNS records
  4. Migrating existing mail

Releasing the website hosting domain name

The system does not allow two services with email hosting to use the same name. First, free up the name by renaming the original website service:

for example, to stary.domena.tld, where domena.tld should be replaced with the original domain.

If a Webhosting alias is blocking the domain name, remove it following the guide Webhosting – Aliases.

Ordering Mailhosting

You can now create a new Mailhosting service for the domain.

Changing MX records to Mailhosting

If the domain does not use WEDOS DNS records, or you do not want them changed automatically for any reason, set the following records after setting up Mailhosting: MX DNS records:

Name TTL Type Data
          300 MX 10 mx1.wedos.email
          300 MX 10 mx1.wedos.global
          300 MX 10 mx1.wedos.com
          300 MX 10 mx1.wedos.mx
          300 MX 20 mx1.wedos.online

Migrating existing mail to Mailhosting

You can automatically migrate existing mail to the newly created Mailhosting service following the guide Email – Automatic Migration, or manually using a desktop client.

When automatically migrating from renamed website hosting to Mailhosting, enter after @ the new Webhosting or WebSite name.

Switching from Mailhosting to website hosting

Switch to website hosting (Webhosting, WMS, WebSite except Free) if you want both a website and email on the domain.

The process consists of these steps:

  1. Releasing the domain name
  2. Ordering website hosting
  3. Changing MX DNS records
  4. Migrating existing mail

Releasing the Mailhosting domain name

First, free up the name by renaming the original Mailhosting service following the guide Mailhosting – Renaming (Changing the Domain) for example, to stary.domena.tld, where domena.tld should be replaced with the original domain.

Ordering website hosting

You can now create Webhosting or WebSite for the domain (except Free, which does not support email).

Changing MX records to website hosting

If the domain does not use WEDOS DNS records, or you do not want them changed automatically for any reason, set the following records after setting up Mailhosting: MX DNS records:

Name TTL Type Data
          300 MX 1 wes1-mx1.wedos.net
          300 MX 1 wes1-mx2.wedos.net
          300 MX 10 wes1-mx-backup.wedos.net

Migrating existing mail to website hosting

You can move existing mail to website hosting using automatic migration following the guide Email – Automatic Migration, or manually using a desktop client.

When automatically migrating from renamed Mailhosting to website hosting, enter after @ the new Mailhosting name.

Common issues

Common issues when switching between website hosting and Mailhosting include:

Domain name used by another service

Problem: The following error appears: The domain name is already used by another service.

Cause: The system cannot contain two email-enabled services with the same domain name at the same time.

Solution: Make sure you have renamed the original service (or asked support to remove the name).

Original service mailboxes inaccessible

Problem: You cannot log in to the original service’s mailboxes (or access fails for the migration script).

Cause: Renaming the original hosting service changed the mailbox name (login).

Solution: For example, if your original mailbox was info@domena.tld and you renamed the service to stara.domena.tld, the mailbox login is now info@stara.domena.tld. If you asked support to remove the service name, enter the service identifier shown in Customer Administration after the @ sign, for example info@w123456. Renaming the service does not affect the mailbox password.

Frequently asked questions

What should I do if I want both Webhosting and Mailhosting?

Email hosting is already included in Webhosting, WMS and paid WebSite plans. You create a separate Mailhosting service only if you do not want website hosting or have it with another provider.

Why do I need to migrate email? Can’t you simply turn off the website and leave email running?

Mailhosting is a separate service and currently does not technically support simply turning off the website.

I want my website as an alias but email kept separate. How do I arrange that?

Unfortunately, this currently requires a separate Webhosting service running both the separate email and the website.
