Hosting WP – Moving from Another Service

On this pageMoving WordPress to Hosting WPMoving emailsFrequently Asked Questions

This guide assumes that the Hosting WP service you want to move to from Webhosting or from a competitor does not exist yet. If you already have the service set up, migrate the website data using any migration plugin.

You can find more procedures and information about switching between VEDOS hosting services in the guide Services – Changing the Hosting Type. For a complete guide to moving services from a competitor, see the article Services – Moving from Another Provider.

In this guide, you will learn:

Moving WordPress to Hosting WP

If you have an existing WordPress website on another hosting service (Webhosting, or with a competitor), we will help you move it to the Hosting WP service. The process consists of these steps:

Copying WordPress

The copy plugin is intended only for migrations to Hosting WP or SODEW. To move to Webhosting NoLimit, use the automatic migration tool described in the guide Webhosting – Automatic Data Migration.

The first step of moving the service is to create a working copy of your website. The process is fully automated by the plugin and includes setting up a test domain, so it does not affect the operation of your website on the original solution in any way.

Pro zkopírování existujícího WordPressu na službu Hosting WP nejprve stáhněte, nainstalujte a aktivujte kopírovací plugin:

  1. At the link https://vedos.cz/vedos-transfer-main.zip ⧉ download the ZIP file with the copy plugin.
  2. Log in to the administration of the WordPress website you want to move.
  3. In the left menu, select Plugins Add New Plugin.
  4. Click the button Upload Plugin.
  5. Upload the file and click the button Install Now.
  6. Activate the plugin.

After the installation and activation are complete, follow these steps:

  1. In the left menu, select VEDOS Backup & Transfer.
  2. Click Full Backup.
  3. Wait for the backup to be generated.
  4. Click the button Run Website Copy on VEDOS Hosting WP.
  5. Wait for the copy process to finish.
  6. Click the green button with a domain in the form xxx.123.vedos.website to open the copy of the website on the given test domain.

Functionality check

We provide the test environment and domain for 30 days from the start of copying WordPress to Hosting WP.

You will find the copied website on the test domain in the form xxx.123.vedos.website. Try out:

  • Speed of the website and administration
  • Functionality of:
    • sending emails via SMTP (the service does not support PHP mail)
    • common processes on the pages (e.g. shopping cart, contact forms, …)
    • logging in with different roles (e.g. admin, regular user, …)
    • services of external providers (e.g. monitoring, payment gateways, …)

If you are moving from an existing Webhosting service, cancel it before the next steps and release the name according to the guide Services – Cancellation.

Setting up the service on your own domain

The procedure below works only if you do not have the Hosting WP service set up yet. To move from the test environment to an already existing Hosting WP service, use any plugin that allows migration between hosting services.

If you are satisfied with the performance of the service and everything works correctly, move to the new Hosting WP service:

  1. Log in to the WordPress administration in the test environment.
  2. In the left menu, select Settings General.
  3. Find the item Site URL (Hosting) and enter the domain name.
  4. Click the button Save and Continue.

After the successful registration, continue with ordering the Hosting WP service ⧉.

You can find the guide to setting up the Hosting WP service in the article Hosting WP – Setting Up a New Service. Migration also works for the trial version, which you can read more about in the guide Hosting WP – Trial for a Domain.

After the order is completed and paid, wait for the complete automatic setup of the system. This includes:

  • Modifying or setting up WEDOS DNS.
  • Renaming the WordPress system.
  • Generating and activating HTTPS certificates for the domain.

Some of these actions are time-consuming, so keep in mind that the website may behave unexpectedly or be completely unavailable during the move. If the problems persist for more than 90 minutes, contact Support. Include the target domain of the website and a description or screenshot of the error.

Moving emails

If you want to use the Hosting WP service in a plan with email (NoLimit, Business), first make sure that no other VEDOS hosting service with the same domain is in the way. If you have such a service, release the domain using the following procedure:

  1. Open the service renaming interface for Webhosting or Mailhosting, or alternatively odeberte alias following the guide at the link.
  2. Rename the service to a subdomain, e.g. old.domain.tld, where domain.tld is the original domain of the service.

Once the domain is released, you can order a new Hosting WP service under that name. Then perform the email migration itself following the guide Email – Automatic Migration.

When automatically migrating emails from another VEDOS hosting service, find the IMAP server address of the original service following the guide Email – SMTP, POP3, IMAP.

Enter mailbox addresses with the current domain of the service (as in old.domain.tld).
