Emails - Manual

In this article you will learn:

Services offered by the mailserver

E-mail hosting, i.e. space for e-mail boxes and a server providing their operation, is part of the Webhosting ⧉, Mailhosting &box;, WMS &box; and WebSite 1.0 &box; services (except for the Free variant).

It supports the following services:

For an overview of the comparison of e-mail services of individual hosts, see the article Services - Switching between Webhosting and Mailhosting.

Restrictions on email services

The following restrictions apply to email services:

  • 5 GB email space (10 GB for NoLimit Extra), additional space at extra cost
  • Maximum size of sent e-mail including attachments: 100 MB
  • Maximum number of emails sent per day: 500(more information), 50 for LowCost Webhosting
  • Prohibiting the use of an SMTP server for sending bulk messages (e.g. newsletters)
  • Webhosting aliases share email inboxes(more information)
  • Email services do not include: groupware, calendar, data sharing, synchronization, Instant Messaging, VoIP

Launching Emails

If you want to run domain-only e-mail, you can have all messages going to any domain address forwarded to an existing mailbox. In this case, follow the instructions in Domains - Basic Redirection.

To make emails work in WEDOS, do the following:

  1. Order a service with email support
  2. Make sure DNS settings are correct
  3. Set up new mailboxes
  4. Log in to WebMail or add your mailbox to your own client

Order mail service

To set up mail, order one of the services:

  • Mailhosting ⧉: contains only emails, you can have your website hosted elsewhere, or none at all.
  • Webhosting ⧉: contains space for the web and emails at the same time.
  • WMS ⧉: alternative to Webhosting with dedicated performance, email services are identical.
  • WebSite 1.0 ⧉ (outside of Free): block editor for web and email.

Setting up email on a domain

For more information about setting up DNS records, see DNS - Domain Records.

To ensure that the e-mail works properly, set up the appropriate MX and security records on the domain:

  • MX records direct incoming mail to mailservers that process it further. Webhosting, WebSite and Mailhosting use different MX records. For detailed instructions on how to determine and set up these records for a service, see DNS - MX Record Type. To point MX records to a service automatically, follow the instructions in Domains - Pointing DNS to Services. This setting only works if the domain uses WEDOS DNS.
  • Security records confirm that emails are sent from servers trusted by the domain (SPF record), refer to security keys (DKIM records), and specify how to handle suspicious messages and who to report to (DMARC). Some email service providers (Google, Seznam, ...) classify emails from a domain without security records as SPAM or reject them outright. For detailed instructions on setting up these records, see the article Emails - SPF, DKIM and DMARC.

If you are moving existing mail, you can create mailboxes automatically as part of the migration.

Access to the mailbox

You can proceed to the post office through:

  • Online client WebMail: you don't need to set up this client, it is available in the browser and always shows the current status of mail on the mailserver. For more information see WebMail - Manual.
  • Your own desktop or online client: you must connect your own client to your mailbox, usually via SMTP and POP3/IMAP. For the necessary server addresses, ports and security, see Email - SMTP, POP3 and IMAP.
